I watched the videos I love Spiders and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? I was very impressed while watching Brown Bear Brown Bear at how the teacher was able to take a non-digital technology (a picture book) and use the pattern of the book to create a multimedia presentation which covered a different standard (in this case-- the standard was vehicles or things that go). It is amazing that her kindergarten students (4 and 5 year olds) were able to take the vehicle that they had drawn on paper, and create/draw their vehicle on the computer using a drawing program. The teacher commented that her students have usually not had any prior knowledge of computers or any computer skills. It is incredible how quickly they developed the skills needed to draw their pictures on the computer. I also really like how technology is used to involve the parents with what their students are doing at school. In this case, I believe the teacher said that videos of the stories were sent home so parent and student could enjoy them.
This teacher referred to her students as being fearless and willing to help each other--I think this excitement to try and learn new things (experiment with the computer) helps you to develop and learn more quickly and effectively. It's okay to have difficulty understanding, struggle with learning, or find yourself lacking in skills or talents-------- Be fearless! . . . . . it will come with time!
